In the darkness a match was lit.

"I was a young girl wanting nothing more than to be loved. From an early age, until I found recovery, my voice was silent, unless I was drunk and angry. I became violent. I became someone I hated, but also someone who realized that I had the gift of being a woman. I used that to empower myself. After 20-plus years of addiction, I wanted to change my life and do right by my children. The road to recovery was a winding one. I am still working on me and being the best that I can be."

About the Author:  Desnee Trevena grew up in Toronto, Canada, where she works in social services, helping abused women and children. She is also an advocate for people with addictions and facilitates community healing circles. This is her first book.

Book Reviews

"This book is amazingly written and a raw truth of her life, it's very sad what she suffered. I'm so proud of who she is in spite of all that she's been through. I knew her Mother and she was a wonderful, beautiful soul who had suffered a lot in her short life. Amazing read, could not put it down once I started reading."

"From the moment I started to read this book I couldn’t put it down… except when I needed to digest what the author went through and experienced due to the tremendous trauma she endured. This book is powerful, raw, terrifying and I think the author truly came out on top in the end. No one should ever have to experience what she did."

"Wow!!! Bravo Desnee!!! If this were a baseball - you knocked it out of the park. Well written, inspiring, raw, truths and a real page turner. I honestly couldn’t put it down. You hit a nerve with your real talk in terms of generational trauma, addiction, self healing and brutal honesty, I am happy to know you are still in recovery and living your best life. Kudos to you on your first book."

"If you want to understand the process of trauma and recovery - than this book is for you. Not only will it remove the whole 'theory based' heavy jargon crap sold now in universities, but it's also straight to the point, it brings depth and raw truth to what it's like being a woman, survivor of trauma, an addict and recovery from both the addiction and healing from all sorts of women related violence. Inspirational and inspiring."
